Places

A place, in Garance, according to the Records in Contexts standard and other metadata models, is any defined and named geographical area or region (see the definition of the Place class in the RiC-O ontology).

The descriptions of places in Garance form an incomplete but coherent geographical reference dataset, built progressively as the records held by the Archives nationales de France (AnF) or the agents described are documented. Many places are already interconnected. Whether it is a municipality, a street, a building, or a foreign territory, each place is identified and described as precisely as possible. Places are then linked to agents or events, providing a spatial context for the other described entities.

A precise and interconnected reference dataset of places makes it possible to trace the history of territories, avoid ambiguities, and provide important elements for the interpretation of records.
